BE GREAT Graduate

The Education staff will work closely with the school personnel to identify the students that are in need of after-school services the most.  Based on the needs of these students the program goals are:

  • to bridge knowledge and skill gaps by integrating fun and educational activities  throughout after school programs
  • to help children grow as individuals and enhance their self- image
  • to assist the Garfield Public Schools to improve the educational development of all students.
  • to provide opportunities for social, educational, recreational, vocational and character development of youth
  • to help children continue to develop self-discipline
  • to provide academic enrichment and remediation activities, positive youth development, improved health and physical fitness.

Using the Boys and Girls Clubs of America’s BE GREAT Graduate program as a model, the program is designed to reinforce and enhance the skills and knowledge young people learn at school during the hours they spend in after school programs. The three main components are:

  • Mentor – Youth Relationship: Each at-risk youth will be paired with a mentor who will support them in becoming/remaining engaged in school and learning.
  • Intentional Tracking: Staff/mentor will develop a system to regularly track warning signs of disengagement from school and provide timely interventions when necessary.
  • Club-School-Family Partnerships: No single system can solve this issue alone, so any effective strategy must incorporate partnerships within the community. Schools, Clubs and families work together to share necessary information to support youth’s progress.
