Boys & Girls Club of Garfield at Garfield Middle School 21st Century Community Learning Center

For years, researchers have drawn a distinct correlation between level of education and quality of life. Today more than ever, it is important that we empower our young people with the kind of education that enables them to pursue their dreams. In order to do so, there must be a comprehensive program that allows our children to explore their professional interests. As technology advances and new exciting career paths emerge, it is essential that our young people are well informed of all the opportunities that exist. The Boys & Girls Club of Garfield at Garfield Middle School 21st Century Community Learning Center does just this and more.

To this end, the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield implements a 21st Century Community Learning Center Program that allows for academic, social, emotional, and physical enrichment while encouraging career awareness and exploration. To accomplish these goals the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield coordinates with the businesses and organizations within the community to ensure that students are afforded ample opportunity for the practical application of those theories learned in the classroom.

Collaborations with various organizations and community leaders ensure exposure to an array of possible career paths. Opportunities to volunteer, workshop, or to observe professionals in the work environment guarantees that students leave the program with an intimate knowledge of the work world. It is expected that continuous involvement with the 21st CCLC programs will produce an advanced group of 216 well-rounded and informed students at Garfield Middle School.

At minimum, the 21st CLCC program encourages the students at Garfield Middle School to start thinking seriously about what their dreams, passions and aspirations are. Our staff members provide the encouragement and instruction that will equip students with the body of knowledge and skills to pursue various career choices. Throughout the process students will work independently and collaboratively; this encourages communication and teamwork while fostering critical thinking and a sense of personal responsibility.

Enabling an exchange of ideas, thoughts, information and concerns throughout the Garfield population makes the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield’s 21st CCLC a true community driven program. The open dialogue between businesses, schools, the Club, families and children is sure to foster the kinds of partnerships that will benefit the Garfield community for years to come.
